"Breathe, River" Returns to the Pump House Sept. 21

S Bouchard September 12, 2025

Multidisciplinary artist and composer Sara Bouchard presents an immersive sonic experience: a 4-channel sound installation inside Richmond's historic Pump House!

Sunday, September 21, 2025, 1-4pm

The Byrd Park Pump House

1708 Pump House Drive

Free with suggested donation. All ages.

"Breathe, River" features a melodic composition based on water quality data from the James River and recorded on tenor saxophone by Jason Scott. The work is informed by conversations with aquatic ecologist Dr. Paul Bukaveckas of VCU Rice Rivers Center and reveals the drastic fluctuations of dissolved oxygen levels in the river due to harmful algal blooms. The piece was originally presented in 2019 with support by a grant from CultureWorks Richmond.

Visitors will be able to tour the building to hear the work. Admission is limited to 20 people at a time. (Hard hats required/provided.) Entrance is free with a suggested donation to Friends of Pump House.

Sara Bouchard is a multidisciplinary artist and composer who uses sound, installation and performance to interweave song and the landscape. She received her MFA from VCUarts Kinetic Imaging in 2019 and her BA from Yale University in 2003. She has exhibited and performed internationally, including at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (CT), The Center for Book Arts (NYC) and ERES Foundation (Munich, Germany). She currently teaches at VCUarts.
